What is #HALTsolitary?

Racial Justice BK is asking all member of GOBK to support the #HALTsolitary Campaign, which brings together advocates, formerly incarcerated persons, family members of currently incarcerated people, concerned community members, lawyers, and individuals in the human rights, health, and faith communities throughout the state to #HALTsolitary confinement in New York’s prisons and jails. We are at a critical moment in the push to pass the HALT (Humane Alternatives to Long-Term) Solitary Confinement Act (A. 2500/ S. 1623) to keep all people out of isolation and create safe, therapeutic and rehabilitative alternatives in New York State prisons and jails. The Assembly passed HALT last year and the Senate has the votes to pass HALT now, but pressure is still needed on legislative leadership to bring the bill to floor votes, and on Governor Andrew Cuomo to sign the bill. People in solitary are subjected to inhumane treatment known to cause devastating psychological damage, which must end now. They cannot wait any longer.

What can we do?

This is the time to show resounding support for this legislation. Join RJBK by showing up, calling, signing and sharing widely! We’re asking you to take action at whatever level works best for you. It’s only important that you do at least one thing. or more if you can. Post to your social media accounts, make a phone call, sign the letter or more.

Call Blast to Urge Passage of the HALT Solitary Confinement Act, Wednesday, May 29:

Make a call and encourage others in your circle to call in today! There are now 33 Senate cosponsors and 79 Assembly cosponsors of the HALT Solitary Confinement Act, and many others committed to vote. With only a dozen session days left in the legislative session, time is running out to pass HALT, and we are joining other organizers in trying to make 1000 calls on May 29. Feel free to use the call script below:

1. Call Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins at (518) 455-2585 and tell her: “Thousands of New Yorkers are suffering in solitary confinement, for months, years, and decades. The HALT Solitary Confinement Act (S1623/A2500) has 33 Senate cosponsors and others committed to vote for it. I respectfully urge you to bring HALT to a vote now (as is, without watering down its protections), so we can finally end this torture. There is no time to lose. Do not let another mind or life be taken by this torture. Thank you.”

2. Call Assembly Speaker Heastie at (518) 455-3791 and tell him: “Thousands of New Yorkers are suffering in solitary confinement, for months, years, and decades. Thank you for your leadership in supporting the HALT Solitary Confinement Act (A2500/S1623). We appreciate that the Assembly passed HALT last year and that you continue to support the bill. I respectfully urge you to bring HALT to a vote now (as is, without watering down its protections), so we can finally end this torture. There is no time to lose. Do not let another mind or life be taken by this torture. Thank you again.”
