State of Tech in the Progressive Movement

January 8, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

We started 2019 with a victory against Amazon HQ2. New York state has the most progressive state legislature. What was tech’s role in this?

Progressive HackNight is a community centered on tech workers wanting to create change. We believe that technology should only exist to uplift and empower communities and help bring justice for all.

We started 2019 with a victory against Amazon HQ2. New York state has just elected the most progressive state legislature. We have passed multiple progressive bills in the state level, from criminal justice reforms on bail to protections and minimum wage for car washers and nail workers. New York is shaping up to be a state centered on justice and fairness for all.

What was tech and tech workers’ role in all of this? What does it mean to be a tech worker in New York? As we dive into 2020, let’s take a look back and discuss what happened in New York during 2019 and what impact that will have for 2020.

On Wednesday, January 8th join us at ThoughtWorks for a night of learning and activism. We will have HackNight directors Rapi Castillo and Daeha Ko, who’ve both worked on many progressive campaigns including Housing Justice for All, the Tiffany Caban District Attorney’s race, and a lot more. We will talk through the victories and challenges in 2019 as well as our aspirations for 2020.

Thank you so much for being part of this community! We are looking forward to learning and fighting alongside you throughout the year.
