Progressive HackNight #47: How to be a Grassroots Design Leader

April 9, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Designers and design thinkers! Want to get involved in volunteer projects, but don’t know how to plug in?

Join Progressive HackNight for a collaborative workshop, where we’ll learn how to use our skills for good and empower each other to bring our expertise and leadership to any project.

Unlike in-house and client projects, volunteer design work in the grassroots has its own unique challenges and strengths. Many organizations and nonprofits are in desperate need of help, but they don’t know what to ask of designers or what tools and methods to use for improvements. There are also issues that no one is working on… just waiting for you to take the lead and design a solution!

By volunteering our talents, we as designers have the opportunity to apply our knowledge to facilitate problem-solving, and we have immense creative freedom to try out new skills, ideas and concepts. In this workshop, we’ll use real-world problems from our community to generate ideas for how we can design for transformative change.

This workshop is geared for designers at all levels of experience, and across all disciplines (UX, UI, graphic design, branding, service design, research, interaction design, whatever!). This workshop is also open to anyone interested in learning more about the design process and design thinking methods that they can use in their work — no design experience required!

LOCATION NOTE: This event is hosted at the Edwin Gould Foundation, 55 Exchange Place, 6th Floor. Please RSVP in advance to secure your spot, and bring your ID to get into the building.

Are you a breakout group? Does your project or organization need help from designers?
Email us at [email protected] so we can use your challenges and pain points as inspiration in our workshop! If you can attend this event, designers can connect with you in person after the workshop to volunteer with you.

The workshop will be led by Annie Hirshman, Senior UX Designer at W. W. Norton and Company and Director at Progressive HackNight. When not designing, Annie facilitates the
Digital Team at Get Organized BK, where she leads design workshops and manages all-volunteer projects across a distributed grassroots network of local activists.
