Canvassing in Pennsylvania with Lancaster Stands Up
July 7 @ 7:00 am - 7:00 pm
On a recent afternoon in Lancaster, PA, two volunteers went out together to talk with voters about the coming election. One was an older Amish man, the other a young political refugee from Chad. They were one part of the largest, earliest canvassing operation that Lancaster County has ever seen.
It’s the work of Lancaster Stands Up, a 500-member group formed after the 2016 election. LSU has been organizing around immigrant rights, health care, and gun violence – and that issue-based work has given them the community-wide reach to change who represents this Pennsylvania district in Congress.
Connecting people from different communities is what Lancaster Stands Up is all about, and it’s changing the face of local politics. In recent weeks they’ve organized dozens of meetings across the district, to talk about how Rep. Lloyd Smucker, the incumbent Republican and a top NRA ally, has failed the district and why it’s time for a change.
Water For Grassroots (W4G), a New York group that supports community organizing work in the swing states, is organizing a car pool from NYC to Lancaster on Saturday, June 30. We’ll join LSU in canvassing for local activist Jess King, leaving NYC at 7:00 am and returning around 7 pm.
