Dear Chancellor Carranza,

Get Organized BK supports the recommendations in the D15 Diversity Plan and urges you and the NYC Department of Education to adopt the recommendations in order to increase equity in our middle schools.

In June 2017, the NYC Department of Education issued its Equity and Excellence for All: Diversity in New York City Public Schools initiative to address segregation in our city’s schools. The DOE then contracted WXY to lead a process that brought stakeholders from across the district together to address the segregation in District 15 middle schools. With input from this working group as well as a host of advisory groups and community members across the district, WXY and the working group released a list of final recommendations on August 3rd.

Get Organized BK strongly supports these recommendations that go beyond merely moving students between schools but also provide for supports within the schools for true equity, diversity, and inclusion. As a currently predominately white-led organization, we feel it is imperative to proudly voice support for recommendations that address a system that has been unfairly weighted in our favor for years. It is past time for the system to provide for all the students in our district. We urge other community members and organizations to join us in embracing recommendations to achieve equitable schools for all the children of District 15.

We strongly urge you to adopt the District 15 Diversity Plan.

Sincerely,
The Get Organized BK Steering Committee Members
