Water For Grassroots meeting

January 9, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

In 2017, Water For Grassroots organized three trips from NYC to Philadelphia, to help community organizations register voters and elect a radical reformer as district attorney. We made phone calls to union retiree groups and progressive congregations in Florida, inviting them to join a statewide campaign to restore voting rights to 1.6 million people with felony convictions. And we did a small-dollar fundraising push for four grassroots groups in Alabama, supporting some of the independent voter organizing that produced the biggest political upset of the year.

What’s next in 2018? That’s what we’ll discuss at our next meeting, on January 9. Here’s some of what’s on our horizon:

** Lancaster Stands Up has invited us to join their door-to-door efforts in south-central Pennsylvania, working to defeat right-wing Republican Lloyd Smucker. They’ll start with a mass canvassing kickoff, putting 100 people in the field on January 27.

** Florida activists need our support, via phone-banking and text-banking, as they fight to win their 2018 referendum on voting rights.

** Grassroots groups in swing states & red states can use help–in web design, graphic design & video production–that skilled volunteers in NYC can provide.

Water For Grassroots (W4G) is a work team in NYC supporting community organizing groups in the swing states & red states. How can New Yorkers help change the political balance in other parts of the country? We’ll be most effective when we find ways to back up local activists on the ground: they know their own communities, and they’re in the best position to do the outreach that’s needed.

Join us on Tuesday, January 9, from 7:00 to 8:45 pm, in Brooklyn at the first W4G meeting of 2018, to make some decisions and launch our work for the new year. For meeting location, mark yourself as “Going” or “Interested” on this page, or email us at water4grassroots@gmail.com. Thanks!
