Register voters in Philadelphia
August 26, 2017 @ 7:30 am - 6:30 pm
How do we build power in the fight for racial justice? Here is one thing New Yorkers can do: Join us to register voters in Philadelphia on Saturday, August 26, to help ensure an anti-racist victory in the election for District Attorney this November. We’ll go down for the day and be back by dinnertime.
Veteran civil-rights lawyer Larry Krasner, known for his defense of Black Lives Matter and Occupy protesters, won the Democratic nomination for Philadelphia District Attorney in May. Electing Krasner as DA would be a major blow against the racist policies that underlie mass incarceration. Krasner has pledged to:
- Never seek the death penalty
- End reliance on cash bail, which imprisons people for being poor
- Refuse to bring cases based on illegal stop-and-frisks
- Reform Philadelphia’s scandal-plagued asset forfeiture program
Krasner’s campaign is based on support from grassroots activists in groups like One Pennsylvania, which we’ll be working with on August 26. Here’s how Mother Jones described Krasner’s insurgent campaign: “Krasner had been opposed by almost every Democratic ward boss in the city, but he ended up winning 44 of 66 wards. He accomplished that by boosting turnout almost by 50% over previous municipal races. He even found some voters who hadn’t turned out last fall when Donald Trump won the state. Most of those new Krasner voters were African American.”
In a time of volatile and surprising election results, Krasner and his supporters are taking nothing for granted. “Simply put, we are going after people who have not been represented and have not participated in democratic elections,” Krasner told the Philadelphia Jewish Voice.
Electing Krasner would take Philadelphia in a new direction. It would be a real victory for justice from the grassroots. And expanding the electorate in Philadelphia can help shape Pennsylvania’s elections for governor and US Senate in 2018, and the presidential vote in 2020.
