Racial Justice BK Living Room Group
March 11, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
The Racial Justice Living Room Group – or the “Living Room Group” for short – is an independent group of Brooklyn residents who meet regularly to have personal discussions about race and racism.
The Living Room Group seeks to create a space for reflection, analysis, and personal storytelling. Participants in the group recognize that racism manifests as an institutional phenomenon … but we also understand that race and racism affect each of us in deeply personal ways. Members of the Living Room Group come together to share those personal experiences, and to hear how racism has had an impact on the lives of our friends and neighbors.
The Living Room Group is intentionally diverse, cultivating dialogue across various lines of difference, including – but not limited to – race, gender, socioeconomic status, religion, and sexual orientation. We believe that cultivating dialogue across lines of difference is an essential component of building understanding. However, we also recognize that American racism has a disproportionate negative impact on communities of color, and because of that, we know that we cannot expect people of color to bear the burden of educating their white peers about racism’s deleterious effects. Such expectations constitute an unfair expectation of emotional labor.
